Muslim travellers here usually eat at good vegetarian restaurants, stop at the halal restaurants near My Tho on the way from Ho Chi Minh City, or pre-arrange halal meals with their tour operator. How We Checked Halal Food in Can Tho
We searched Tripadvisor’s halal filter for Can Tho, Google Maps in English and Vietnamese (halal, Muslim, Indian, Malaysian, kebab, mosque) across Ninh Kieu, Cai Khe, Tan An and Cai Rang, older halal travel guides, and the public certificate registers. Several restaurants appear in Google Maps searches for “halal” but list beer, wine and spirits on their menus and have no halal kitchen, so we left them out. We only recommend a restaurant as halal when it is Muslim-run, holds a halal certificate, or clearly states that its food is halal, and we rank the vegetarian alternatives by Google Maps rating, weighing both the score and how many people have reviewed them.
We also searched the register of Halal Vietnam (HVN), the country’s main halal certification body. It lists Can Tho food factories and seafood exporters, but no restaurant or hotel. You can search the HVN certificate register yourself.
Best Vegetarian Restaurants in Can Tho for Muslim Travellers
With no halal restaurant in the city, a good vegetarian or vegan restaurant is the safest everyday choice: there is no pork, no other meat and no meat stock. They are not halal-certified, and some restaurants serve drinks such as beer, so check the drinks list if this matters to you. Ranked by Google Maps rating:
1. Ngon Vegan – Ninh Kieu Wharf
The best-rated meat-free restaurant in Can Tho, right on the riverside by Ninh Kieu Wharf, with outdoor seating in the evening breeze. The menu is long and creative, staff speak good English and card payment is accepted. As a vegan kitchen it uses no meat, fish or animal fat, which makes it one of the safest places in central Can Tho for Muslim travellers who cannot find halal food.

2. Tinh Binh Vegetarian Restaurant
A calm, contemporary vegetarian restaurant with a lotus pond and an air-conditioned room, often named by reviewers as their favourite restaurant in Can Tho. The menu is very large and leans on mushrooms and tofu. Some dishes are named after meat (for example “pork” with kimchi); these are mock meats made from soy or mushrooms.

Nearest Halal Restaurants: My Tho, on the Way from Ho Chi Minh City
The closest real halal restaurants are on Thoi Son island at My Tho, on the Mekong Delta day-tour route about 70 km from Can Tho in a straight line (about 1.5–2 hours by road). If you travel from Ho Chi Minh City to Can Tho by road, a halal lunch here is the easiest way to eat properly on the way.

Eating at Cai Rang Floating Market
- Fruit is your best friend. Pineapples peeled on the spot, mangoes, rambutans, watermelons and coconuts sold from the boats are naturally halal.
- Avoid the noodle-soup boats. Hu tieu, the famous floating breakfast noodle soup, is made with pork bones and usually topped with pork.
- Coffee and drinks are fine. Vietnamese iced coffee, sugar-cane juice and coconut water from the floating stalls contain no pork or alcohol.
- Bring a halal breakfast. Boats leave Ninh Kieu Wharf around 05:30–06:00, before restaurants open; take bread, fruit or snacks from your hotel or a supermarket.
Practical Tips for Muslim Travellers in Can Tho
- Plan your halal meals before you arrive. Eat a halal lunch near My Tho on the way, and ask your tour operator to arrange dinner in Can Tho in advance.
- Be careful with Can Tho specialities. Banh xeo, banh cong, hu tieu and lau mam (fermented fish hotpot) usually contain pork. Grilled snakehead fish (ca loc nuong trui) is pork-free in itself but is cooked on shared grills.
- Hotel breakfasts are not halal. Choose eggs, bread, fruit and vegetarian dishes, and ask for eggs to be cooked in a clean pan.
- Learn two Vietnamese phrases. “Khong thit heo” (no pork) and “khong ruou” (no alcohol) help when ordering; “chay” means vegetarian.
- Check prayer times yourself. With no mosque in the city, use a prayer app for prayer times and the qibla direction.
